Carrying
Illinois Disability Insurance is a necessary part of doing business wisely.
A certificate of insurance is verification from the insuring company that coverage under certain circumstances exists. It will include the type of coverage, the dates the policy is effective, and the monetary value available for a claim. Commercial industries that are required to carry insurance need to be able to trust that the certificate they receive is reliable. In a case of inspection, accident, or claim, the certificate and coverage must be accurate and adequate. It’s each business owner’s responsibility to make sure they have the documentation they need.
Business owners need protection in the event of an accident from liability. Because they will not always do this of their own accord, laws and insurance companies have placed protective requirements. Expenses can soar unbridled for uninsured accidents; it’s much wiser to pay a regular premium than it is to lose your business after being sued and found liable. For example: your personal auto insurance policy will not cover you if the accident occurs while you were using your vehicle for business purposes. If you do not carry commercial coverage you will be treated as an uninsured motorist. You can be found liable and guilty of breaking the law.
If you operate a business with a vehicle, you need commercial auto coverage. Many times a certificate of insurance is required in connection with various contracts and business agreements. The kinds of coverage you provide should be included with your bid for the job and stated clearly on your Certificate of Insurance.
Things to know about your Certificate of Insurance (COI):
• It shows that an insurance policy has been purchased
• It is not a substitution for the actual policy
• It must show when the policy goes into effect and when it expires
• It must show what kinds of coverage have been purchased and the monetary value and limits of each
Proving you are adequately insured is good risk management. Misrepresenting coverage is not only against the law: it also leaves you vulnerable to being found liable for a claim. This is not always within the control of the business owner. While insurance companies are supposed to issue notices of cancellation, they don’t always, leaving businesses under the false impression they have coverage.
Business owners must be vigilant in working with reputable insurance companies.
An independent insurance agent should be on the "speed-dial" of any
business owner. Some states have imposed requirements on COI’s; make sure your agent understands your state’s laws and help you comply with them. Companies will have many different insurance needs and a professional that can assist you with every line will save you time, money, and hassle.
